“Severus, where are the kids?” Harry asked, taking off his Auror’s robes and hanging them in the hall closet. He walked over to where his husband sat reading the paper and leaned down, kissing him quickly, but sweetly on the lips. Usually their two children were jumping all over him by now.
The corner of Severus’ mouth kicked up in pleasure from the kiss and secret amusement at the answer to Harry’s question. “I think it would be better if you saw for yourself what your children have been up to today.”
His brow wrinkling in confusion, Harry wondered what Ira and Emma could’ve gotten into; there was no telling. But whatever it was, obviously there was no need for concern since Severus was almost smirking with delight.
“Okay, take me to them.” Harry gestured for Severus to lead the way.
Harry knew that the adventure, or more likely an activity just verging on trouble, would be Emma’s doing. She was only 7, but was already sure to be sorted into Gryffindor. A strong leader, and stubborn to boot, she could charm, convince and nag her older brother, and fathers, into almost anything.
Ira was quieter, incredibly intelligent, and less obvious in his manipulations, but just as devious as his younger sister. This past school year was his first at Hogwarts and neither Harry nor Severus were surprised when he was sorted into Slytherin.
Harry heard laughter, light and trilling, long before he stepped out the back door into the garden. It was empty. Shooting Severus a questioning look, he smiled as the delighted and delightful sound broke the quiet summer afternoon again.
“This way, behind the garden, down near the gully.” Severus let Harry precede him.
Eyes widening in disbelief, he turned to Severus, “Are they—“
A rare, full-blown grin that only graced his family stretched Severus’ lips. “Yes. They are.”
Harry turned back to watch the loves of his life. Ira and Emma were hip deep in the gully, which had been transformed into a stream with the recent rains. Swimming in the muddy water, laughing and splashing without a care in the world, they played.
Helpless against the love welling up inside him, Harry looked at Severus and saw the expression mirrored in his eyes. He slid his arm around Severus’ waist, leaning into him when Severus pulled him close with an arm around his shoulders.
After a moment they disengaged and Severus pulled out his wand. He smirked at Harry and raised an eyebrow that clearly said ‘Are you thinking what I’m thinking?’ Harry answered him wordlessly by reaching for his own wand. They walked down to the bank of the gully and told the kids it was time for dinner.
Clambering up from the gully and grinning from ear to ear, their white teeth shinning out from the mud, the imps stood unrepentant, completely covered in brown-red clay and dripping rain water. Severus caught Harry’s eyes and they raised their wands in synch.
Shrieks and giggles filled the air once more, this time with deeper tones providing the perfect counterpoint.
